Geneva, 1 July 2019: Dunea is a Dutch water utility supplying pure drinking water in harmony with nature. Dunea strives for a sustainable balance between water extraction, nature conservancy and environmental management.

From the heart of the Randstad, a busy area in the Netherlands, Dunea uses dunes situated between Monster and Katwijk as part of the purification and production process, supplying drinking water to more than 1.3 million people every year.

This unique method requires that Dunea ensures the best possible nature conservation in the Solleveld, Meijendel and Berkheide dunes. Over a million visitors visit the dunes every year.

Dunea sells around 80 billion liters of drinking water every year, employing over 500 people locally.

Wim Drossaert, Chief Executive Officer of Dunea said: “We are very happy to join WBCSD and become part of the important work all the members are doing to accelerate the transition to a sustainable world. Sustainability is part of our DNA and it sits at the heart of our company.

“We are therefore highly committed to participate in the in-depth discussions with other members inspiring and helping us address the challenges we face regarding the increase demand for clean water in an area facing huge climate challenges as well as land decline, sea level rise, salination in connection with a strong population growth, the need for more and new energy sources, reducing the carbon footprint of energy, as well as from digitization and globalization. These factors can radically impact our way of life in our delta and need to be addressed by sustainable solutions.”

WBCSD President and CEO Peter Bakker said “WBCSD is pleased to welcome Dunea as our newest member. This is an innovative company working in harmony with the natural environment on which their business depends. We look forward to working in collaboration with Dunea to advance our work and to help Dunea address their challenges for mutual benefits.”
