GAA is committed to fostering greater agribusiness engagement and action to find solutions to sustainability challenges. Many are shared across commodities and geographies and reflected in GAA’s four areas of focus: landscape-level partnerships, effective smallholder-supply engagement, water stewardship, and tackling food loss and waste. By establishing a ‘Community of Practice’ GAA members have the opportunity to knowledge-share and joint-problem-solve. This ‘Community of Practice’ operates in three distinct ways:
1. In-person knowledge-sharing. Ten in-person presentations and discussions have been facilitated during biannual member meetings since GAA was launched. Members have reported the value of these in strengthening their understanding as well as informing and shaping their work moving forward. GAA knowledge-shares usually take place in a safe, trusted and member-only space. Occasionally we extend the invitation to non-members. Below is a selection of those presentations approved for wider sharing.
2. Development of bespoke tools to support member company sustainability journeys. For example, the Action Learning Projects developed in collaboration with the Alliance for Water Stewardship. These tools are implemented with GAA support. Progress includes the completion of the first at a Phoenix rice operation in Karnal (Haryana, North India) – two more are underway during 2019 including an assessment at a rubber processing site in Jambi, Indonensia.
3. Case Studies. Collating strong examples of agribusiness action has an important role to play in sharing and scaling positive outcomes on the ground. GAA is currently focusing on developing a ‘portfolio of evidence’ on agribusiness partnerships for sustainable landscapes, and on tackling food loss and waste.
