Tire & Road Wear Particles (TRWP)

TIP continues to support studies into tire and road wear particles (TRWP). For a multimedia introduction to the topic of TRWP and a detailed account of the studies that TIP has sponsored to-date, visit www.tireparticles.info

Nanomaterials

TIP supported studies into nanomaterials include:

  • Evaluation of Quantitative Exposure Assessment Method for Nanomaterials in Mixed Dust Environments: Application in Tire Manufacturing Facilities. (2015) - link

Methods for the Generation of Cryogenically Milled Tire Tread (CMTT)

This report describes the methods utilized in a 2019 TIP-commissioned project to generate cryogenically milled tire tread (CMTT) particles - link

Using the TIP methodology, the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) will produce CMTT and provide samples to researchers to advance scientific study on TRWP. Researchers can request samples via the USTMA website. Complementing the USTMA initiative, TIP has committed to make representative CMTT available for other regions by the end of 2022.
