Cenk Alper, Board Member and CEO, Sabanci Holding

We are delighted to announce that Cenk Alper, CEO & Board Member of Sabancı Holding, joined our Executive Committee last month. To mark this occasion, we spoke with him to explore his thoughts on how WBCSD and global businesses can work together to raise ambition for a more sustainable world, act at speed and scale across business operations and value chains, and sharpen the accountability of sustainability performance.

What inspired you to join WBCSD’s Executive Committee, and what are you most looking forward to contributing?

I joined WBCSD’s Executive Committee because of its pivotal role in shaping a sustainable future for global business. Collective action, real collaboration, and shared knowledge are essential to tackle the biggest global issues our world faces. I am excited to drive deeper integration of sustainability into business models, accelerate the transition to a net-positive future, and work alongside leaders who are equally committed to making a measurable impact. I look forward to contributing to cross-sector partnerships and scaling sustainable innovations.

What do you see as the biggest sustainability challenges facing global businesses in 2025, and how do you think we can turn these challenges into opportunities?

I foresee the most significant sustainability challenges being the need to keep climate goals alive due to geopolitical changes, particularly as we have breached the 1.5C climate limit, and making circular economy and water initiatives widespread. These challenges, however, present clear opportunities for innovation. Companies that embrace sustainable business practices will lead the way in developing new technologies, enhancing supply chain resilience, and meeting the growing demand for responsible products and services. The shift towards circular economies, sustainable resource management and inclusive growth models can not only help businesses navigate these challenges but also create long-term value for shareholders and society at large.

How do you see the role of WBCSD in driving urgent, scalable action and enhancing accountability in business operations and value chains?

WBCSD plays a critical role in driving scalable, systemic change by supporting companies align business strategy with sustainability goals. Through its global network, WBCSD enables businesses to share best practices, set shared targets, and develop solutions to address key sustainability issues. By enhancing transparency, setting clear standards, and advocating for policies that incentivize responsible business practices, WBCSD helps ensure that businesses are accountable not only to their shareholders but also to the broader social and environmental systems in which they operate.

How can global businesses make sustainability performance a key driver for competitiveness?

Global businesses can make sustainability a key driver for competitiveness by integrating sustainability metrics into their core business strategies, which will enhance long-term value creation. Companies that prioritize sustainability not only reduce risk but also unlock new market opportunities, attract talent, and build stronger relationships with customers who are increasingly prioritizing sustainability. By innovating around circular models, efficiency, and sustainable sourcing, businesses can differentiate themselves in the marketplace and demonstrate leadership in the face of growing regulatory and consumer demand for responsible business practices.
