Urenco has today joined over 200 of the world’s leading sustainable companies as the newest member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

Geneva, 03 November 2022 – Urenco is an international supplier of enrichment services and fuel cycle products with sustainability at the core of its business. Operating in a key nuclear fuel supply chain area for 50 years, Urenco facilitates zero-carbon electricity generation for consumers worldwide. With its head office near London, the United Kingdom, Urenco’s global presence ensures diversity and security of supply for customers through enrichment facilities in Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and the USA.

A leader in responsible nuclear stewardship, Urenco is an early signatory of The Climate Pledge and the first nuclear organization to commit to net zero by 2040. Urenco is now translating this commitment into a clear roadmap with ambitious science-based targets covering their scope 1 (direct), 2 (indirect) and 3 (supply chain) greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

Recently Urenco enriched enough uranium to generate an estimated 780,000 GWh of electricity from nuclear power, avoiding approximately 320 million tonnes of carbon emissions; they achieved reductions of 16% for scope 1 and 9% for scope 2 carbon emissions compared with 2020 and reduced their water withdrawal by 12% from 2020.

By connecting with WBCSD’s network of forward-thinking businesses across various sectors, Urenco aims to impact global corporate sustainability.

Robert Little, Head of Sustainability, Urenco, said: “We are delighted to join the WBCSD at such a critical time for the net zero transition and energy sector as a whole.

“Nuclear power alongside renewables has a key role to play in this transition by generating reliable, low carbon electricity and hydrogen or hydrogen-based synthetic fuels.

“Sustainability is part of everything we do at Urenco, and to be able to share learning across the international business community and collaborate to make substantial progress on United Nations Sustainable Development Goals can only result in a positive outcome for all concerned, as well as the global community.”

Peter Bakker, President & CEO, WBCSD, said: “Urenco’s services and products provide a valuable contribution and solutions to a low-carbon economy and sustainable net-zero future. Having them in our membership and working with diverse companies from all over the world on tackling the global imperatives of our time – climate, nature and equity – will support transformation throughout value chains, contributing to the realization of a world in which more than 9 billion people are able to live well, within planetary boundaries, by 2050.”
