The urgent need for a transformative approach to agriculture has never been more critical. Regenerative agriculture presents a holistic solution to transform the way we produce food, feed and fiber, benefiting climate, nature and people. Farmers work the way they do because of the current public and private incentives in place. To safeguard supply chain resilience and transition to agricultural models that operate within planetary boundaries, we need coordinated demand signals from agricultural value chain players. To this end, we need to converge on how to measure, report and support farmers toward positive impacts on environmental (soil health, climate, biodiversity and water) and socioeconomic outcomes.

WBCSD has prioritized strengthening corporate performance accountability systems for carbon, nature and equity. In support of this effort, WBCSD and One Planet Business for Biodiversity (OP2B) launched a regenerative agriculture initiative in 2023. The goal is to consolidate farm-, landscape- and global-level outcomes and metrics with corporate reporting.  Widespread alignment of outcomes and metrics will encourage accounting, reporting and disclosure bodies to develop specific guidance for regenerative agriculture. This collaborative effort involves 52 members and 33 business-focused partners, engaging more than 1,100 businesses.

To date, we have co-developed a short list of cross-sectoral regenerative agriculture outcomes, aligned with key sustainability frameworks, planetary boundaries and UN SDGs to be considered depending on the context (see figure below). Additionally, we identified the metrics that are most aligned with key sustainability frameworks and reporting and disclosure standards. These findings can be referenced to help accelerate broad-scale public and private investment. Outcomes and metrics have been proposed based on analysis of existing frameworks and refined through scientific review and series of deep dives to refine toward the outcomes.

Connecting with Regen10

Our collective effort fosters alignment beyond the private sector, with the wider stakeholder space through the Regen10 initiative where WBCSD leads the private sector engagement. Regen10 is developing a farmer-centric guiding framework.

Guidance for business

To support businesses in the transition to regenerative, we have developed a series of guidance materials with members and partners. The guidance spans a series of chapters including:

  • Climate
  • Biodiversity
  • Water
  • Soil
  • Socioeconomics
