On 16th April 2025, the European Commission adopted the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Working Plan 2025–2030, outlining priority product groups and policy directions under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). This marks a critical step toward making sustainable products the default in the EU, with upcoming Delegated Acts expected to define specific requirements for product durability, reparability, recyclability, and more.
To help companies prepare for the ESPR, we’ve developed a Readiness Assessment Tool in collaboration with ERM. This tool allows companies to evaluate the availability of key product information required under the ESPR for a product or product group of choice —helping identify gaps and areas for early action before the regulation is fully enforced.
Future iterations of the tool may enable users to filter per product/product group, in accordance with emerging Delegated Acts.
A step-by-step approach to assessing ESPR preparedness
The tool has been designed to address both the performance and information requirementss set out in Articles 6 and 7 of the ESPR. It breaks these down by product aspects (Article 5(1)) and lifecycle stages, helping companies evaluate their current reporting readiness across key sustainability criteria.
Through a guided Excel interface, users can input information and receive a high-level readiness assessment. This enables businesses to proactively prepare for future ESPR compliance and forthcoming Digital Product Passport (DPP) requirements.
Next steps
We are building on this work within the Circularity Data Exchange (CDX), by exploring how to enable better sharing of and access to circularity data, to support various uses – such as compliance with the ESPR’s performance and information requirement.
